1st First Day of School

Today was Quentin's first official day of ever going to school. He starts preschool 2 mornings a week from 8:30-12:30. He was pretty excited that he got to pick his school (I took him on a tour of 2 places) and that he gets to have friends (that are boys and like to do boy things).

He's been going to visit the classroom and play on the playgrounds since last April when we were accepted off the waiting list. He's been talking about school and how excited he is to be like his sisters and go to school. Then, this morning when he woke up he decided that he'd rather not go to school. He had some anxiety about leaving his sisters and his mom behind. Sophia was Sophia and extremely compassionate and caring and told him all the fun things he'd do at school. Isabella helped him get dressed and Ava played with him to calm his fears (really...what do these perfect children even need me for?).

I told him I'd take his picture in front of the gate with his backpack on. He helped me pack up his extra clothes and his Epi pen and his Benedryl. We went over again that he should tell everyone that he's allergic to nuts. I also reminded him that the last time he was there and touched the classroom bunny that his eyes swelled up and that he's also allergic to the bunny and shouldn't touch her. He asked about the change of clothes and Isabella told him that was for accidents. Instantly, I saw a look flash in his eyes. I told him that it's for emergencies only and not just accidents.

He was excited to get his picture taken in front of the gate at home. A ritual he's watched for 3 years now with his sisters. He decided to wear his Diego shoes since they make him run "fast". He was disappointed he couldn't wear flip flops or sandals to school, but Diego made it better.

At school we took more pictures and there were even balloons tied to the front gate welcoming all the kids and their families. The assistant director took our family picture in the lobby of the school and even snapped a few of his sisters kissing him good bye. He was excited and bounded off down the hall to his classroom.

Inside, he started playing right away with the workbenches, firetrucks etc. He pointed to the reading loft and told me that there were too many girl things up there and he wasn't going to go with the "girlie" stuff. Apparently, there are dolls inside the reading loft...along with books.

When I went back to pick him up this afternoon I noticed that he was indeed wearing his spare outfit. Hmm...he's had like 3 accidents ever and has been potty trained since last August. I inquired with the teacher and wondered if it was just a painting accident or playground incident. Nope...she smiled and said, "He's smart and he's a stinker". He apparently had a little dribble accident in his underwear on purpose because he thought it might be cool to change clothes at school. He insisted on changing everything too...not just the underwear. Undies, shorts, shirt, even socks. She said, he also had them in a panic because he said he touched the rabbit. They didn't see him touch the rabbit but he was teasing them that he did. So, they were frantically washing his hands and checking his eyes for swelling.

So...he's definately my kid alright. There were 2 things that he shouldn't do and he did them both on the very first day of school. Just because he could.
