A Pawtastic Reader

I am so pleased to report that Sophia spent the entire morning with her nose in a book. She woke up and started reading, carried the book and read in the car on the way to breakfast, read while we ate breakfast, read more in the car, took the book with us on some more errands, finished the book sitting in the lobby of the library so that she could go in the library and get another book and then preceded to read the book she got at the library in 35 minutes (65 pages).

Now, most people would eventually ask their 8 year old to get her nose out of the book and engage in the world around her. NO, not us...we were so stinking pleased that she was once again reading like she used to.

3 months post head injury and she's finally back the reader she was before the injury. She's really struggled since her injury with reading. For the first 4 weeks she absolutely flat out refused to read and even screamed if we showed her books. The second 4 weeks we bribed her to read and we encouraged smaller book aimed at younger readers that were "easy" for her but we asked her to read them out loud to smaller kids (she mentored Kindergartners at school and read a ton to Quentin). The last 3 weeks she has gone to the library and read for 15 minutes to Lucy or Anabelle. Lucy and Anabelle are sisters. They are huge dogs that are therapy dogs. Reading out loud to the dogs was exactly what Sophia needed. Sophia graduated this past Wednesday with her Pawtastic Reader Medal. We are so happy to see her face in a book and her eyes bright and happy. We're sooo happy that she finally coming around after 3 months of frustration. We're relieved at the progress she is making.
