March 18th--one year later

Last year on March 18th Quentin was rushed from a beautiful 4 day vacation at Disneyland Resorts to a hospital in Anehiem. He was gasping for air and scared the crap out of me. He was diagnosed with both Asthma and allergies about a month later. We still do not know what it was that brought on that first episode, he had been fighting a cold but it wasn't his first ever cold).

In the year that has followed he has been on Pulmicort through a nebulizer twice a day for 9 of the last 12 months. Anytime we tried to take him off if he got a cold he'd end up wheezing and become unstable breathing wise. If we leave him on the meds and he gets a cold all we do is add Albuterol as neded for 4-5 days and he does well enough.

He hates the breathing treatments. He doesn't mind the Singulair pill and the Zrytec taken daily. The days we have to add Albuterol are frustrating because those are 4 times a day in the neb and take breathing treatments take 2 hours a day instead of 30 minutes a day.

Earlier this week I took him in for his one year asthma evaluation. The pediatrician would like to keep him on the Pulmicort and Zrytec at least until June (hoping we get through this spring cold and allergy season unscathed). She said he is doing a lot better and that it's a good sign that although he's had more breathing episodes he has never had any attack worse than the first and seconds ones and has only required hospital treatment once.

He gave her this face >:-\ and told her he didn't like breathing treatments and that he didn't want to do them anymore. She told him he was cute but that he still needed them until his birthday. He seemed to be agreeable to that. She did say we could cut out the Singulair now and see how that goes.

I'm betting if we make it until June without any episodes or having to add albuterol at all she'll take him off the Pulmicort through the summer at least.
