Skittles, Glitter and Leprachaun catching

It must be St. Patrick's Day.

Many years ago we knew little of this Leprechaun holiday. All, we knew is if you didn't wear green you'd get pinched. and, lucky for me I have green eyes so I'm never without my green.

Then 3 years ago Isabella's 1st grade teacher at the time introduced the concept of writing to the Leprechauns (Leo, Larry and Lance) and a tradition was born. Unfortunately, I cannot keep up with all the commercialization of holidays and I forget every year.

The kids write letters to the Leprechauns and the Leprechauns are supposed to leave behind a mischievous mess, a pack of skittles and a hand drawn picture of themselves.

Well, this year I was once again caught off guard. I forgot to buy the Skittles when I was out alone without any kids watching. Isabella wrote Leo a last minute note and then went to bed.

I raided the Halloween candy basket until I came up with 3 packs of Skittles and one pack of M&M's. (I was saved by the fact that Sophia can't eat Skittles). I sprinkled glitter on the floor between the front door and the table and I laid the treats on the table with more glitter on top (hey, that's all the mess these Leprechauns are allowed to make at my house). If they want to make more mischief and mess they can go to school and do that ;)

Quentin is very enthusiastic about holidays and traditions this year. he asked a lot of questions about Leprechauns for the last 4 days. He's confused as to why they would want to make a mess (that's my boy).

And, here's your St. Patricks Day tidbit fromt he O'Morris-O' Ubaydi's...If you actually catch a Leprechaun it's important to remember to hold them by the thumbs. If you hold their thumbs they can't snap their fingers and snapping their fingers is how they move to get away.

Next year...Potato Famine facts!

ps: for dinner we're having homemade corned beef and cabbage with mint chip ice cream for dessert. YUM!
