Extreme Fun and Extreme not so fun

On Friday we booked a spur of the moment Extreme sports coastal Cali 3 day trip. Wow! You ask what that may mean huh?
At 10am Friday while leaving the gym I received a text from Rami stating...get home now you have one hour to pack, we have to leave!!!

Ha! OK, so pack 5 people for a coastal trip for 3 days and do it in 1 hour. It took 90 minutes.....

The plan. 3 days, LA to Huntington Beach with many stops in between. The quintessential Cali-style vacation.

XGames in LA
Visit Auntie Jen
Stay overnight at The Beverly Hilton on Wilshire
Window shopping on Rodeo Drive
The Farmers Market at the Grove in LA
The Santa Monica Pier
A coastal drive to Orange County
Stay at the Hyatt Resort in Huntington Beach (they have a kids water park on site)
Catch some of the action at the US Open of Surfing in Surf City USA

Fun Fun Fun in the California Sun was on tap. The last vacation before school starts next week.

The X-Games were amazing and so funny to see the kids enjoying it. They actually knew who the major BMX and Skateboarding guys are. We were shocked. They had fun being part of the hip and cool LA scene.

We met Auntie Jen and Mr. Nate for dinner at Roccos pizza on Wilshire Blvd. good times, good pizza, capped a good day.

Slept in an amazing room at the Beverly Hilton. Woke up to an equally amazing breakfast and headed out for a walk on Rodeo Drive. Kids were slightly disappointed that there were no kids stores on Rodeo Drive...this part of the trip was all about mommy. I drooled over a few things, took some pictures and was content.

We drove on Historic Route 66 through West Hollywood and headed to The Grove in LA. home of the Farmers Market AND an America Girl Doll Store. I told the girls I'd buy them some dolls since I had been wanting to do a girl trip for that anyhow. That pumped them up. But, first.....Farmers Market. What an awesome place! It was great exploring the food vendors in the market, having snacks and checking out some history.

On to the American Doll store. Each girl got a twin doll of themselves and picked one outfit. The dolls got their ears pierced and Ava's even has matching purple glasses.

Back in the car and up the 405 to Santa Monica. The famous Santa Monica Pier. Worst, most expensive pier food ever! But, fun times on the Ferris wheel and roller coaster. Now, I'm not a coaster girl...don't like the feeling of falling. The coaster goes around twice making one stop in between at the station. Now, here's some irony...Rami likes roller coasters. He sat with Q during the ride. Q is like his momma and does not enjoy the Coaster. So, during the stop at the station he begged the people to let him off and they did. So....momma gets stuck staying on the coaster with the girls while Rami exits the coaster with Q. NOT FAIR!!!! I survived.....

After we left the pier (the end of the road on Route 66) we travelled south to Huntington Beach. witnessing at least 2 LA accidents on the freeway...CRAZY people I tell ya!

The Hyatt Huntington Beach is one of my all time favorite places. We went there last year for our anniversary and I loved this place. They have a kids water park within the resort and there is sooo much to do here. After checking in we hit the salt water pools for a night time swim. Grabbed our jeans and sweatshirts and headed out to the courtyard for a Rolling Stones cover band and some frozen treats.

In the morning we had a beautiful breakfast by the fountains and viewed the ocean. we walked down to the Huntington beach pier where the US Open of Surfing was taking place. We got to watch a couple heats and see some amazing water maneuvers before we decided to head back to the Hyatt for some waterpark fun and lunch. We'd planned to come back to the pier in the afternoon after check out at the hotel.

The kids were hot and cranky and it was a long walk back. we packed and changed and headed to the water slides. with sunscreen applied the kids were super excited to go down the slides. I grabbed my camera for some action shots before I settled into my chair for an afternoon in the sun. 10 minutes later I heard a crack.

I looked 4 chairs down to my left and Sophia was laying on the pavement. She had slipped on the pool deck.

After checking her over we realized that this was a serious injury. She had a bloody head wound and short term memory loss. 40 minutes later we were in the Hoag Hospital ER. THIS was not part of our Extreme plans.

The memory loss was significant and terrifying. After 4 hours Sophia started to regain some short term memory and was less confused. A CT scan showed that there was no bleeding on the brain but the doctor did say she had a pretty severe concussion. And, she needed 3 staples to close the gaping wound on her scalp.

It's been nearly 48 hours...she's doing better each day. She still doesn't remember the fall itself. She's on complete bedrest for a week, when the staples will be removed. She's on further bedrest for another week after that. And, then for a month after the brain heals she'll be on restricted activities. There is a real concern for post concussion syndrome considering the magnitude of the concussion.
