Allergy Skin Prick test

Q had his skin prick test today. After having 2 RAST blood draws in 2 years that came back with opposite results AND having had anaphylactic reactions twice to walnuts now the allergist wanted a skin test to determine the true allergies. The doctor feels that in order to maintain quality of life that the children should be allowed to eat as many foods as they can and not have to eliminate ALL nuts out of fear.

So, Q had 12 "pokes". What a trooper! He didn't cry at all. He began itching almost immediately and many of the sites swelled within 5 minutes. But, after 30 minutes only a few of the sites were still reactive. The doctor did NOT test the walnut. Basically, after having reacted at home twice with a walnut we KNOW 100% that he can never have a walnut again.

The tests they performed were:

#4 Peanut=non reactive

#18 Shrimp=non reactive

#19 almond = Slightly Reactive (a member of the walnut family)

#20 Brazil nut = non reactive

#21 Cashew = non reactive (this was one that showed positive on the RAST 2 years ago.

#22 Hazelnut = non reactive

#23 Pecan = non reactive

#25 Sunflower = non reactive

#26 sesame seed = non reactive

#27 Pistachio = Slightly Reactive

So, now our next step is to slowly reintroduce the non reactive nuts (in a specific order) and then we're left with the remaining 2 nuts on this list...pistachio and almonds. After testing all the non-reactive nuts at home we should first give pistachio (during office hours only) and then lastly Almonds. If he passes all of these challenges then the only food he needs to avoid for the rest of his life is Walnuts.
