Open House

Do you remember open house night? Where your parents came to school to see all the wonderful things you've done in your classroom since the beginning of the year? The excitement and anticipation of having your parents at school, at night! And, the worry that they won't like something you've worked so hard at?

Tonight was open house. Isabella was first. 2nd Grade, Mrs. Acevedo room 19. There were many wonderful handwritten projects on the walls. Each project chronicled the life of a 2nd grader who has come so far in 8 months. Moved on from trying to read to reading confidently. Formulating her own thoughts, expressing herself, challenging herself to push that envelope. It was a relaxed visit to the classroom, spent following our 2nd Grader around listening to her explain with enthusiasm exactly what she does in every corner of the room.
Skipping across the courtyard on our way to Kindergarten.

Sophia was next. Kindergarten, Mrs. Ponce room 5. Just as a kindergarten classroom should be...not an inch of wall or window space left to decorate. A room shared by 40 children in 2 classes. Organized chaos. That big toothless grin showing from ear to ear. Sophia escorted me to her desk. Read me her letter to me...

Dear mom and dad,

Please make sure you look at my...
1. book shelf
2. Lopins (lupines are a California native flower)
3. ckoins (coins)

love from,
Sophia

So, we explored. We looked at the 3 wonderful things she pointed out and so much more. Ladybugs were crawling in their covered dome, butterflies were snuggled in their pupa stage and celery sticks soaking on food coloring were on the science table. Spring artwork of flowers, kites and caterpillars were all around the classroom. Spelling words and blending charts dominated the teacher board. Sophia let us explore on our own while she practiced writing her spelling words on the dry erase board. Ava bounced around taking it all in for next year. Quentin was well mannered and looked around and then caught a glimpse of the teacher. Stopped, turned and ran yelling "Ponce" and gave her a big hug.

It was a nice evening as a family talking about and thinking about all those things we do in the day while we are at school. We left with a handful of projects to bring home and pride in our hearts.
