As part of our quest to teach the kids about the land that we live in we've taken a trek north one hour. That trek takes us to the base of the San Bernardino National Forest. 45 minutes and 7000 feet to the top of that mountain is Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City. First snow was sighted at almost exactly 5000 feet up. Shrieks and giggles ricocheted around the minivan as soon as the first black sludge was seen. As we climbed higher the snow was fresher and more white.
Only in Southern California can you experience 3 degree morning temperatures at the top of a mountain and then the next day be back to 75 and sunny at the ocean shores. We are so lucky to live in a place that within 2 hours we can be in the desert, at the sea shore or on a mountain having a snow ball fight.
