Sophia had her Orthodontics evaluation today. She has Class 3 Skeletal Pattern. This is a serious condition in which the lower jaw grows faster than the upper jaw causing an under bite (aka bulldog bite). The new bottom teeth coming in are trying to adjust by slanting themselves back in an effort to stay behind the new front upper teeth. A second problem is that there is not enough room for all her lower teeth to come in. The spacing is just not there.
The difference between the upper and lower jaw can only be around 5mm in order for the treatment to be effective. Sophia's case is close and after some computer calculations the doctor should know more about the amount of millimeters we're talking about.
If the difference in jaw growths is less 5mm or less then Sophia will wear a face mask at night. The mask will pull her upper jaw out. The face mask is only effective for 1 year and must be done early. We should see a difference in 5-6 months. Depending on how some more of her bottom teeth come in she may also wear partial braces on the lower teeth and/or have a tooth pulled.
Unfortunately, we were not prepared to have Orthodontics at such a young age and none of this is covered by insurance.
She will also most likely need standard braces around 12 years old.
